Engaged Employees = Thankful Employees

This Thanksgiving, how many people list their job or the company they work at as a something they’re thankful for? I’m going to guess you won’t hear that often – but I am thankful to be an employee at Ceridian, a company that cares about my engagement.
The term ‘employee engagement’ is thrown around a lot these days. But what does it really mean to those employees? Forbes magazine defines it as “the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals.” To me, it means going the extra mile for a leadership team that truly cares.
So what does it take to nurture a ‘thankful’ employee? Read on for some concrete examples straight from the source; me!
Send me a quick “Thank You” email
I feel engaged as an employee when I feel I’m contributing value to our team. The easiest, most actionable way to let your employees know they’re adding value is with a quick thank you. I’ve found that an email recognizing a job well done is extremely motivational for me personally.
Show me you care about my health
I feel engaged when I’m given the freedom with which to balance my personal and professional life. A perfect example of this freedom is our lunch time yoga program. Everyone knows it’s hard to get to the gym after work—but in the middle of the day? It’s much easier. Having a subsidized fitness program is a fantastic way to encourage your employees to take care of themselves from a health perspective. Work-life balance for others could mean having more time to spend with family. In that case, having the flexibility to allow employees to work from home on occasion to reduce their commuting time goes a long way.
Encourage me to get involved
I feel engaged when my organization shows its support of my community. In recent years, it’s become a bit of a fad to include a ‘volunteer day’ for employees to use at their leisure for the organization of their choice. Fad or not, last year during the holidays I was proud to give back to my community by making a turkey feast for people in my neighborhood.
Make my learning & development a priority
I feel engaged when I’m encouraged to join training programs and participate in on-going learning. According to the 2016 Ceridian Pulse of Talent report, 63% of respondents felt that training programs were a key driver in their organization’s culture. Training doesn’t have to be complicated to be impactful. During a day-long meeting with my team, our leadership called in a guest speaker to hone our storytelling talents. It was an interactive, exciting way to learn a new skill. Another great example is company hosted Lunch & Learns. Offering quick courses on everyday skills over lunch is an engaging, productive way to spend an hour.
By making even one of these activities a priority, you will be well on your way to creating a more engaged and ‘thankful’ workforce.
I can’t write a blog about being thankful and leave out the incredible mix of talented, hardworking, passionate people I’m so happy to call my colleagues. I look forward to coming into work in the morning because of the people I work with. I would go so far as to say that each of us are thankful for the opportunities our careers have given us. When we feel that we’re being looked after, respected, and recognized by our employer we are more engaged. And when you’re engaged, that extra mile feels like nothing.
This Thursday, I’m going to take a moment to be thankful for my career. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.
